cut and pierced lampshades & silhouettes
Cut & pierced lampshades are what I started with, I learned this craft about 25 years ago- (country decorating was in). I learned some of the techniques from my sister-in-law and some from a video I bought, it's something you have to practice a lot before you finally have one - the cutting is done with a knife and the piercing requires a special tool. It's all done on a flat surface (glass) before the paper is applied to the shade rings. I remember the books and patterns, I made so many of these shades which I paired with converted oil lamps, it was a good look for the time. These 2 are still in use at my mom's house, she has trouble getting rid of things I make even as styles change! I don't see a lot of cut and pierced shades out there any more, I might have to see what I can come up with! It would need to look more modern somehow..
Speaking of my mother's house- she's collected silhouettes for a long time, and I have made some of those as well- the bottom picture is a folded book with my hand cut silhouettes. The others are antiques.
